Dental Crowns Restore Damaged Teeth

Tooth damage can affect your appearance and the structural integrity of your teeth. Fortunately, damage can be repaired and restored with dental crowns provided by your Alpha, NJ, dentist, Dr. Richard Lachenmayr.

How do dental crowns work?

Crowns, also called caps, are hollow restorations that slide over the top parts of your teeth. The restorations are made of tough materials that can withstand years of chewing, including porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, ceramic and resin.

During your first crown visit to the Alpha dental office, your dentist prepares your tooth by reducing its size slightly. Making your tooth a little smaller ensures a proper fit for your restoration. Your new crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory using an impression of your mouth taken at the dental office. A temporary crown will cover your prepared tooth until your permanent crown is ready. A few weeks after your first crown appointment, your permanent crown will be cemented on to your tooth.

When are crowns recommended?

Your dentist may suggest a crown if a piece of your tooth broke. When your new crown is in place, no one will ever be able to tell that your tooth was damaged. Adding a crown stops pain that can occur when the broken ends of the tooth are exposed to the air and restores normal biting and chewing. Broken teeth are considered a dental emergency and warrant an immediate call to the dentist.

A crown protects a tooth that's weak, crumbling or cracked, has a large filling or has undergone root canal therapy. Weak teeth are at increased risk of breaking. If a break extends into your tooth roots, it will be impossible to save the tooth. Crowns strengthen teeth, preventing breaks from occurring.

Crowns can also hide discolorations or imperfections, and change the shape or length of teeth. If you have one or two teeth that are twisted or crooked, orthodontic treatment isn't always needed. Adding crowns can make problem teeth look straighter and more uniform, improving your smile.
